Data updates in Local Insight

As we get settled into the new year, we have plenty of data updates to get stuck into, with plenty from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and several new indicators too:

New data

Percentage of children in poverty (after housing costs): End Child Poverty has published new figures on the level of child poverty in each constituency, local authority and ward in the UK. The Centre for Research in Social Policy makes these annual estimates for the End Child Poverty Coalition, allowing them to map the percentage of children in poverty at small area level for a snapshot of time (July – September 2017).

Please note: This dataset is not directly comparable to the previous Children in Poverty dataset included within Local Insight. As such, we have kept both datasets available. The previous indicator is called Children in poverty. Take a look at our blog for more on how the data was constructed and caveats for use.

Data on your local housing market: We have added two new measure of the local housing market:

  • Inflation adjusted 10 year house price change by house type (using the CPIH index)
  • Ratio of residential transactions to number of private dwellings – a measure of housing ‘churn’

Take a look at our blog for more on how these datasets were constructed and some headline trends.

New health measures: We have added data from Imperial College London, taken from a longitudinal study on a number of health conditions including:

  • Percentage of people aged 45+ with (severe) hip osteoarthritis
  • Percentage of people aged 45+ with (severe) knee osteoarthritis
  • Percentage of people with (severe) back pain

To add these new datasets to your maps and dashboards, you will need to use the Manage Indicators feature. Search in the Unassigned theme for the datasets and drag & drop to the theme you wish to display them in. If you have any trouble, get in touch on support@ocsi.co.uk

Data Updates

In addition to the new data, as always, we have ensured everything else is up-to-date, so that you can be confident you are using the most recent data available.

Indicators include:

  • DWP Claimants data
    • Attendance allowance (broken down by age, gender and higher / lower rate award)
    • Disability living allowance (broken down by age, gender and higher / lower rate award)
    • Employment and support allowance (broken down by age, gender, higher / lower rate and reason for claiming)
    • Income Support (broken down by gender and living arrangements)
    • Incapacity Benefit (broken down by age and gender)
    • Pension credit claimants
    • Unemployment benefit (JSA & Universal Credit)
    • Youth Unemployment
  • Life expectancy
    • Female life expectancy at birth
    • Male life expectancy at birth

And finally, due to Sport England’s correction for the Active Lives data, we have temporarily removed the indicator People physically active (at least 150 minutes per week in the past month) from Local Insight. When Sport England republish the data, which will also include a more recent time point, we will add this back into the tool.

Update your reports

Reports have been updated with the latest data. To see the latest data in your reports, you must generate new reports for your custom areas. You can do this one by one – or you can update all reports at once.

Please note: We recommend that if you are using the bulk update feature, to do this at the end of the day, then all reports will be ready and waiting for you the next morning.

Please read the full guidance on the Knowledge Base ahead of using this feature.

Speed improvements

Our tech team have also been working away to improve overall site performance of Local Insight. The most recent updates have resulted in maps loading much faster with data – let us know if you have noticed any difference!

Bulk update reports!

Update all your reports in one go

We strive to keep the Local Insight reports up-to-date, so that you can be confident that the data you are using is the most recent available.

Until now, this has meant a lot of laborious clicking to update your reports (especially if you have hundreds of custom areas!).

But we can do better that. We want Local Insight to be as easy to use and intuitive as possible. So, we are thrilled that you can now bulk update your reports!

This was one of the key feature developments requested by users at the Local Insight User Group. Alongside this brand new functionality, we have also made improvements in the background to ensure that the reports run as smoothly as possible.

How to use this feature?

  • Navigate to the Reports tab at the top of Local Insight (or navigate here)
  • There will now be showing a new button which looks like this (see below image)
  • Click the button and shazzam, all your reports will begin to update! (please see the ‘Top tip’ section below for the best times to update your reports)

How long will it take to update all reports?

The time it takes to update all your reports depends on how many you have. Roughly, each report takes around 10 minutes and they will appear in the Reports tab in sequential order. Please note, this will depend on how many other users have also updated all of their reports, so this may take longer during peak times (i.e. following monthly communication about updates to reports).

Top tip

If you are using the Update all reports button we recommend that you do this at the end of the day, then they will all be ready and waiting when you arrive in the morning. This will also help to ensure that reports run smoothly for other users.

Please note: You will not be able to generate/update any reports individually until the ‘update all reports’ task has fully completed (i.e. all your reports have updated). There is no queue jumping, so if there are a few reports you would like immediately, we would advise requesting those reports individually first and then pressing the Update all reports button.

Let us know

Any feedback on the process would be greatly appreciated. Do let us know at support if you have any questions.

Happy reporting!
